I mentioned earlier that Albion and Edwards County pioneers, Birkbeck and Flowers, were influential in the drive to make sure that Illinois became a “free” rather than a “slave” state. Here’s the actual vote totals on the question. Yes, the voters actually voted in August of 1824. A couple of important people, namely an A. Lincoln and a U.S. Grant rose to prominence in that free state of Illinois.
