Do We Call Him Great Grandpa Fisher?

John F. Fisher was the father of Rude Fisher. So he was my grandmother Della’s grandfather. He was Wilma, Jerry, Jim and Don’s great grandpa. We don’t see his name in the newspapers, except for this one jewel. The reason is probably because a lot of his land was in Wayne County (yet he did own land in Edwards County also).

Note the description of him as “... an aged and wealthy farmer residing in the neighborhood of Scottsville...”. Scottsville is an area west of Albion over in Wayne County. He had 4 surviving sons and we have a great picture of him with their families from 1910.

Earlier we saw that Joe Dixon (Sr.) was an idea man after all, coming up with a new taxing scheme. Great Grandpa Fisher was a home-grown engineer. I wish my dad had heard this story while he was still alive. He devised a contraption to catch owls and hawks who were after his chickens. It involved a rat trap and a 15 foot “scantling”. Google it. The death count reached 18 within the first 3 months. Not popular with environmentalists of today, I’m sure. A little chicken wire might have worked without all of the drama. But when was chicken wire invented? And what was the price?
