Joe Dixon (Sr.) served in many voluntary and stipended roles to do his share for the community. One of these was to be a road supervisor, checking on the local roads and helping to keep them relatively functional.
A new law created Road Commissioners for each district. In this case, Dixon Precinct also served as the “road district”. It was given the designation District 7 within the county. I’m not sure whether there was any taxing or spending authority or whether the commissioner was even able to put a proposal in front of the road district’s voters to do a road improvement project.
In any case, Joe Dixon (Sr.) led the pack on Election Day, beating 5 other candidates. We’re undefeated! It leads to a question.... has anyone else in the family ever run for public office? Anyone who dealt with public funds had to post a bond. This was done, back in the day, by lining up friends who would commit to reimbursing the county if you absconded with any money.
