Old Class List of Lucy Dixon

Lucy Dixon appears on the class roster, which was shared with me by her daughter Faye Shaw.

This is just the first of what I hope will be many school records that we can obtain of our ancestors.

The Edwards County High School, a modern consolidated school just at the western edge of Albion on Highway 15, has all of the old Albion High School records. When I visited there in July I didn't have enough information about George or Della and their school attendance to obtain any records. I hope to discover some records eventually.

Starting with the children of George and Della, high school annuals are available. My mom has a complete set of Anderson High School annuals for the years that she and dad attended AHS together. They were 1947 graduates.

The record above lets us know that Lucy had returned to the family by her junior high years (not sure if she was in 7th or 8th). Unfortunately, the Ridge School is no longer there. It was located next to the Brown's Chapel church, which is still there.

You also get a glimpse at the class of a real one-room schoolhouse. Look how many Webbs, Coads, and Shaws there were in attendance. All siblings, or at least cousins! There were several Dixon's there in previous years. Lucy was the last of the Dixon's to attend. There are also some names, like Kershaw and Frankland, that may or may not connect to Dixon relatives. Lucy's mother was a Kershaw. George's (and Lucy's) sister Stella married a Frankland.

The interesting question it raises... was teacher Harry Glover.... the Harry Glover... the one that married Lucy's older sister Sadie? And the answer is... drumroll please... yes! Harry J. Glover, teacher, farmer, and later postal worker, married Lucy's big sister Sadie. Faye says that Aunt Lucy later worked for the postal service, one of very few women to do so back in the day. Aunt Lucy used to brag (in jest) that she was the highest paid woman in Illinois! Brother-in-law Harry helped Lucy get the job according to daughter Faye. An old teacher always looks after his former students! Lucy also attended a couple of years of high school. Faye believes this was during her stay in California... she stayed with her Aunt Mary's son Sumter, who was also a good friend of Lucy's. Aunt Mary being Joe Dixon Jr.'s sister Mary Dixon. Other than an obituary mention, this is the first anecdote I have involving Mary.
