OK, Not an Oopsie for Grandpa Fisher

We earlier saw a listing of delinquent taxpayers where my grandmother’s dad, Rude Fisher (or Grandpa Fisher as he was known in the family) forgot to pay his taxes.

Well, it’s possible that he really didn’t like paying taxes.

He made the list again in May of 1996, failing to pay the $1.28 he owed on a 5 acre parcel. I’m guessing this is actually the residential property. And then he failed to pay again in May of 1997.... but the good news is that he now failed to pay on 3 different parcels totaling 35 acres and a bill of just over $9.00!

Here’s an alternate theory: My dad’s cousins told me that most of Grandpa Fisher’s land was located west of the Little Wabash River in Wayne County. These are perhaps smaller properties in Edwards County where or near where the house is located. So you would pay less attention, right?

I once forgot to file an IRS return for an educational foundation in Okeechobee. We owed no taxes for the non-profit. Some foundations do owe taxes on some of their activities. But there are still penalties for failing to file. Fortunately, a good accountant handled the matter to the satisfaction of the government.

In this case, I’m sure Grandpa Fisher just paid the tax bills before some vulture bought the tax certificate on the courthouse steps.
