A Rude Fisher “Oopsie”
One thing I did not expect to see was the name of a family member in the annual publication of the Delinquent Property Tax List. However, Rude Fisher, my great-grandfather, made the list in 1898. I need not state the obvious and very reasonable reasons for his tardiness in paying taxes. After all, Fisher land was way, way far from the county seat and the tax collector only scheduled one day per year for everyone to come to somebody’s house to pay their taxes.
It must have worked out. The land remained the property of Rude Fisher for many, many years. In fact, my brother remembers playing there when he was little in the 1950’s.
He owned 10 acres at the time. I believe this was eventually expanded. He owed a mere $2.56 in taxes for the year. Hardly enough to justify the cost of an Uber to go all of the 7 miles to Albion. But he made the trip anyway, as failure to do so would result in the sale of the property at an auction on the courthouse steps in a couple of months when county court was in session.
