1880 Census Dixon Precinct

The 1880 census gets the spelling of our name correct. We have:

Joseph Dixon, aged 48, a farmer.
His wife Grace, aged 43, a housewife
Ada 19
Sarah 17
Joseph 15 (Note: So we start using Joe (Sr.) and Joe (Jr.).)
Charles 12
Hannah 8
Alfred 6
Anne 84, Joseph’s mother.

There is no mention of Alice A., but she would be 22 years old and probably married and out of the Dixon household. (Note: This is not the person we knew as “Aunt Alice”. That Alice would become Joe (Jr.)’s first child.

We also have:

John W. Dixon, aged 20, a farm laborer and the son of John Dixon (Jr.). He is listed in the household of his cousin John H. Marshall, aged 32.

We don’t have dates of death of the missing people, other than John Dixon (Sr.). John Dixon (Jr.) may have been living in White County to the south or in West Salem, just north of Albion. He would have been 50 years old. We also don’t see the original Alfred, who would have been 45 years old.

Of special note, we have:
George Kershaw, aged 40.
His wife Sarah, aged 47.
And their daughter, Mina, aged 14.

And in a few years Mina weds Joseph and they have lots of kids, including my grandfather George.
