The 1870 census record uses the Scottish spelling, “Dickson” throughout, including calling the area “Dickson Precinct”. However, the rest is consistent. Alfred Dixon and Hannah Marshall are not living in Dixon Precinct, and maybe not Edwards County, although I can’t assure myself that I looked over the other precincts.
On page 82 of 603, we find:
Joseph Dickson (sic), aged 37, a farmer. His wife Grace, aged 32. And the children:
Alice A. 12
Ada M. 9
Sarah G. 7
Joseph F. 5
Charles I. 2
Note: Two more children to come- Alfred and Hannah, obviously named after close ancestors. The 5 year old is my grandfather’s father.
Joseph estimated his real estate holdings at $4,000 and his personal estate at $7,000.
Also, we have John Dickson (sic), aged 40, born in England. His son John W., aged 10, born in Illinois. John’s wife Margaret is not listed.
Neither John Dixon (Sr.) or wife Anne are listed. John (Sr.) died in 1868. However, Anne survived and was listed in the 1880 census in Joseph Dixon’s (Sr.) household. She was 74 in 1870 and 84 in 1880. Update: It turns out that Hannah Marshall died before her father per his will.
James Dixon is not listed.
