The Happy Sad Tale of Aunt Ada

George Dixon’s Aunt Ada, another daughter of Joe Dixon (Sr), was wed to Mr. Henry C. Hallam, a nearby farmer. Nothing much else was mentioned in the article of 16 September of 1886. No description of cake and punch or where the wedding took place. I knew the Hallam family owned several parcels of land in Edwards County, including some in Dixon Precinct. It had the looks of a larger, wealthier family. It seems like Joe and Grace Dixon’s girls had no problem finding a solid guy.

And then tragedy struck!

The February 24, 1887 Albion Journal reported the death of Mr. Hallam. Barely 5 months of marriage and he was gone. The newspaper describes him as “... a prosperous farmer and stock dealer...” and reported that he “... died... after a lingering illness, and was buried on Monday at the Ridge Cemetery, impressive funeral services being conducted...” They reported, “He leaves a young wife, and a large number of relatives...”

The article in the Albion Journal was actually a reprint from the Grayville Independent, which leads to the possibility that more of our family history can be found in that newspaper, if any older issues survived.
