Service as an Election Clerk

Joe (Sr.) often served as an election clerk. He served in his home precinct and always was a clerk, rather than the polling place Judge. The appointment in this case was made by the county commission. He did get paid for the day. Seems like $3 was a fair amount for sitting around a polling place on a November day! This seems very similar to what happens in Florida today. Poll “watchers” are sent by the political parties, but the actual poll workers are appointed by the local Supervisor of Elections and are paid a small stipend for the day.
