Not once. Not twice. Three times running.
Pardon the pun!
I ran in high school to lose weight.
But my Uncle Don was a star. We boomer cousins remember the blue ribbon under the glass protector on the desk in our grandparents living room.
I asked Uncle Don to describe his track and cross-country career. Here's his reply:
I ran track and cross country all four years of high school. Started high school in the fall of 1947 and graduated in the spring of 1951. I ran on Anderson's high school's cross country team and we won the state championships in my soph (1948), junior and senior years. The first state meet occurred in 1946 and Anderson dominated about the first 7 or 8 yrs. We ran our home meets either at Edgewood or Grandview golf courses. I ran the 440 yd race and the mile relay in track and Anderson won a lot of meets but never won the state track meet my four yrs of running. However, Anderson did win 4 or 5 state track meets before my time. Anderson's dominance of track and cross country state titles was primarily due to the fact that we had undoubtedly the best high school coach in the nation, Coach Carl Bonge. He had the tremendous ability to asses the innate ability of each individual and then trained each accordingly which this then contributed to great teams. Coach Bonge coached Anderson from 1936 to 1956 and passed away in 1957. Coach Bonge was very dedicated and took 8mm films of all the meets and would have us to come to his house to have pop corn and a coke to review the films to see where we could improve. Anderson went down hill in both track and cross country after the passing of Coach Bonge. I have a VCR which shows all of the track and cross country teams running a lot of meets for most of Bonge's years.
Thanks to Uncle Don for sharing!
So... does anybody know how to upload video to youtube?
Now we need to hear from... or at least about... Erin and her running career.
I ran in high school, but did not have any significant achievements. A few stories (I can share later), but no achievements!
