The pictures were both taken at Wilma and Warren's 60th wedding anniversary in 2006. The older picture (or possibly a portrait/painting), was taken shortly after their wedding. They were married in May of 1946.
Note: Curt Thacker supplied the pictures above and the information in this post about his mom and dad's wedding and early years of marriage. His mom, Wilma, is the eldest child of George and Della Dixon.
They were married at the parsonage of the Noble Street Methodist Church by Rev. Ben Frankland. As I had mentioned in an earlier e-mail, Dad's brother Wayne and wife Wanda stood up with Mom and Dad. Grandpa and Grandma had a small reception for them afterward at their home on Walnut Street.
Mom and Dad's first home was an apartment on Pearl Street. At that time, they were both working for Delco-Remy. When Dad first came to Anderson, he worked for a little while at Edgewood Country Club then took a fulltime job at one of the tile factories. He left the tile factory for a job at Guide Lamp, and worked there for about 6 months. He and a life-long friend, Vernon Dixon (no relation), were laid off the same day and both immediately applied to and were hired by Delco-Remy. He worked there for 2 years prior to going to the service then for about 4 more years after returning from the Army. Dad opened his own business, the Pure Oil station, in 1952. Mom left Remy's after she became pregnant with Rich, about that same time they bought the house on 10th Street. Mom had worked at the A&P grocery store when she was in high school.
I never knew that my Aunt Wilma ever worked outside of the home. But the pattern is similar to my mom's (working until the first child is born). I wonder if there were many women working at Delco in those years?
