The Dixons Join The Merry Wedding

I think I originally passed on this article, but decided to share it when it came up during my experimentation with the search function with the Illinois Digital Newspaper Collection web site. The wedding of a Glover and a Brown would be a big deal in Dixon Precinct and the Dixons (and future spouses) were well represented. Sadie Dixon, my grandfather’s sister, actually married Harry Glover, who was in attendance. Like the Tait wedding, it seemed like a great party and the gift list is a hoot!

Here are some examples:

Ada and Sarah Dixon were bridesmaids. They were two of Joe Dixon (Sr.)’s girls and thus George Dixon’s aunts.

Henry Hallam, a groomsman, married Ada, then died soon thereafter.

The ever-present Charley Dixon, my grandfather’s uncle, gave the couple of clothes brush.

Harry Etheridge, the future husband of Eliza Hannah Dixon, another of Joe Dixon (Sr.)’s girls brought a set of “gold band pie plates”.

John Dixon (presumably Jr.) gave the couple a preserve dish.

Sarah Dixon gave them a cake stand.

Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dixon (Sr.) gave them a pair of printed linen towels.

Joe Dixon (Jr.), not yet married, could afford a fancy parlor lamp.

Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Marshall (that’s the first Hannah Dixon and Mr. Marshall was still kicking) gave them a half dozen chickens!
