Joe Dixon (Sr.) Supports Farmers
We know that Joe Dixon (Sr.) was a farmer because newspaper accounts refer to him that way. We also know that he owned a reasonable amount of acreage in a farm area. This article reports on a planning committee for an annual event called The Farmers’ Institute. This was a two day event where speakers shared the latest and best of farming methods and information about new crops, tools, etc.
From the committee structure, it had some similarities to the Teacher Institutes of the time. Notable among these were the plans for “singing”. That’s a separate committee from the entertainment committee. I just can’t see the dairy farmers or ranchers in Okeechobee, Florida or the farmers in Spencer, Indiana joining in for a sing-along at their meeting. However, the Kiwanis and Lions clubs do sometimes sing a tune now and then.
The institutes were arranged for a multi-county area encompassing the entire congressional district, so it was something the Edwards County folks were hosting that year.
We can only guess what the “In the Country” committee was responsible for planning. Maybe tours of local farms?
