Happy Go Lucky Charlie Dixon

Charles Dixon, son of Joe Dixon (Sr.) and Grace Dixon, was the brother of Joe (Jr.) and uncle to my grandfather George Dixon. He was good to my grandparents when they were newlyweds in Albion. Tragedy would hit in a few years, but the late 80’s... that’s the 1880’s... were good for young Charlie! His parents threw a party for him on his 21st birthday and oddly enough it was reported by the correspondent for Dixon Precinct... no doubt a “wing man” of young Charles.

By the way, the benefit for the church mentioned above Charles birthday party mentions “the band”. That was probably the Dixon Cornet Band, featuring Joe Dixon (Jr.).

In January 1889, the correspondent pokes fun at “Charley” as being the luckiest fellow at the Christmas tree! “He was seen taking home all the early Rose Tait-ers he could well manage...” Rose was the daughter of John Tait (Sr.), the neighbor next door. Not the first or last time that Mr. Tait probably didn’t appreciate the reporting that was submitted to the Albion Journal.

I’ll have to check again, but I think Charles was just playing the field at the time and Rose was not the ultimate Mrs. Charles Dixon.

There was also the fact that Rose’s brother had just died, suddenly, in his early 20’s, from Typhoid after a trip to Grayville.
