Lincoln Marker in Albion

Abe Lincoln gave a speech near Albion long before he ran for president. His support for other candidates in the Whig, and then Republican parties, earned him the respect of many Republicans across Illinois and the entire country.

The marker is in front of the modern Edwards County High School, just west of Albion on Highway 15.

I highly recommend Team of Rivals, the Doris Kearns Goodwin book about Lincoln's strategy for winning the presidency and his appointment of his chief rivals to his cabinet.

There is no record of attendance, but I assume there was a good chance that John Dixon and his son Joseph would have attended the speech, since they were prosperous farmers in southern Edwards County.

As always, be sure to click on the picture to see the detail on the marker.
