John Dixon

John Dixon brought his wife Ann (Stead) Dixon and two of his children to America around 1840. Three other children came the next year.

John's grave marker is about 7 feet tall. It's one of the largest in the cemetery. Ann’s marker is older, since she died many years before John, and it's lettering is weathered, but still barely legible. I didn't have time to do an etching, but will do it on the next trip to Albion.

The cemetery is located behind the Ridge Church, in Dixon Precinct. Dixon Precinct, similar to a township in Indiana, was renamed for John Dixon, a sure sign of wealth. The man it was previously named for was killed in a Shawnee Indian raid. Timing is everything!

It appears that the church, cemetery and a local school were built on land donated by John Dixon. The church is probably a little closer to Grayville, than Albion. There is a great pictorial history of Grayville that is sold by the local (Grayville) newspaper.
