The Marriage of Jerry and Mary Alice (Wellons) Dixon
My mom and dad were married on June 4, 1948 at the Noble Street Methodist Church in Anderson, Indiana.
My dad’s friend David Given was the best man. Mom’s friend Mary Jo Stanley was her bridesmaid. Besides close family and very few friends, guests included my dad’s grandfather "Rude" Fisher and my mom’s boss, Mr. McCrary. Barbara Given sang at the wedding. A reception was held in the church basement.
Dad borrowed a car from my grandfather, Ralph Wellons, and off they went to Cincinnati for a honeymoon. Mom told me that they both actually worked on the day of the wedding.
Dad was employed at the time by Container Corporation. He had not been called to work at Delco yet. (Mom indicated that Delco and Container had an unwritten agreement not to hire each other’s workers. When Delco called my grandmother’s house, she just told them he was not in... not mentioning he was at work... at Container!) Mom worked for McCrary Insurance and Realty downtown. She started there in high school and worked until Jay was born. She loved Mr. McCrary and he offered to sell the business to mom and dad when he retired, but it was the 50's and mom stayed home.
Their first residence was a one room apartment in the 1200 block of West 6th Street. There was an enclosed porch for a second room. They shared a bathroom with another apartment. They then moved to a better (not much) apartment on Madison Avenue. The roof at this apartment leaked onto their bed and they had problems getting the leak fixed until mom moved the bed and the rain dripped through to the owner’s rooms on the first floor.
They had no car for the first year and walked to work or rode the bus if they had bus fare. Mom suffered frost bite on her right ear one day. Dad had called and told her to ride the bus because it was 15 degrees below zero... but she didn’t have the 15 cent bus fare and the Realtor’s Christmas party was at noon that day... so mom walked to work.
They later moved to a new house on Alexandria Pike and then built a bigger house next door where they lived until shortly after we left home.
Jay, Lee and Todd and their families took Mom and Dad to Chicago for their 50th Wedding celebration. Mom and dad went to Chicago every other year or so when we were young for long weekends of theatre and steakhouses. We told them we would treat them to a long weekend, but we were going too! We'll post the picture of the group at the Chicago Hilton (on Michigan Avenue near the Museum Campus) when it is digitized.
The pictures above are of the wedding and 50 years later in Chicago on their reunion trip with the whole family.
